The Stairs

by Charles J Hannan

On the staircase I go up a steep trek
Tripping up from time to time
Past the stains and regrets
The cat hairs and struggling
Trampling on the beaten down late 1960's carpet
I slip from time to time
Often using the railing
Before falling to my death
Knowing a cold granite floor awaits my fragile neck
The steps not being of correct measurement
My foot overhangs
Leaving the heel of my foot to guide the way
Going down
And the ball of my foot going up
Mixed with little shortcomings
I usually walk
Or roll
Slide down safely
My beaten down late 1960's body seems in stride
