P.S.

by Megan Guimbellot

Insert key in lock and turn
Wading through a tumult of coupons, advertisements, bills offers
to slide grasping hands across a smooth white surface, indentions of pen marks brush against fingertips
Everything else in the recycling bin, bills on the counter to be worried over later
All I have time for now is this.

Peel back the seal, careful//glue weakened by August heat and unyielding humidity//your smell leaks from the pages bringing me back in time more effectively than any time machine, than any song you used to sing
Pages slip out, tattered edges, crackling in my slightly shaking hands
My eyes tumble over your words
Greedy
Hungry
Searching for some meanings hidden in the inbetween of your slanting cursive, hinted at by the aggressive dots to your i's and inky slashes of your t's.
But this letter could be anything, to anyone
Some journal entry to never be glanced over again
A polite correspondence from some distant relative I may have met once when I was four or five and have long since forgotten
A letter from mere acquaintence to acquaintence, written in a haste, sealed without thought, and dropped away casually.

Oh well.

The recycling bin beckons and for the benefit of nature and everything else I hold dear it's time to throw you away.

Author's Note: I still love getting letters in the mail, even if they don't say what I want them to.

you have given the paper a full life...recycled or burned or breathing...it has lived. you should write more. this is a bit gnashing, a bit softcore. at first it felt so personal, and the further it came along...it felt like a total stranger. either way, you pick the perfect words...not too much, not too little, not too brainy, not too simple. i like the i's and t's part. you're a well-looped g yourself. as in guimbellot or girl, not gangster. sensy
