White Scarves

by Joe Cramer

She wore a white scarf
Around her neck.
So white in fact
It looked like a silken bandage.
She said it was a part
Of a Halloween costume
Though she vehemently denied
She celebrated that holiday at all.
Her scarf seemed to me
To be a way of hiding from everything
To wrap herself in a cocoon.
Reminded me of Elvis on a Las Vegas stage
An escape into adolescent frivolity.
She wore a white scarf,
So I gave her a black one.
