The Battle Still Rages by Joy SyHis presence permeates
Pronounced by your need to lie
against the pillow
Clinging to your body
eroding the muscles
that had once held you up
confident and debonaire
With every drip that falls
Every breathless word
Knowledge of his eminent victory
seeps into my consciousness
Threatening to overcome
and wet my cheeks
I do not know you
screams my soul
at the familiar stranger
cloaked by malady
I did not see you
till I looked into
your sunken windows
The rags he has heaped upon you
no longer register
In my mind's eye
you looked as you did
the hundred moments we spent
thinking up solutions of never ending problems
I did not say goodbye
for though it was twilight
It is not yet dusk
Night has not fallen
