Topic: Less an Open Book, More an Open Grave

by Aaron Michael

history teaches the future
if only we repeat
and regret that we do.

these yellowed parchments
scripted in a language foreign
but so familiar and so
simple
with high-handed morals
and naive hopes
can either save or kill or
save those that it murdered
for future generations to resent
and recycle all into democratic
solutions in a world of anarchy.

yet mankind needs it so.
yet mankind cannot handle it.

and the guns we use to protect it
so fiercely
we will soon turn on ourselves
and splatter new ink
for the next time
morals are written
to stand time's test.

I really liked the flow of this. It gels with the subject matter of the topic well too.

...immense.... I'm sorry I'm out of words today (like many lately), so this is the only word I have for now...and it means more than it says...just so you know...

This poem made me think of that pastor in Florida who wants to burn the Qur'an. Really, I am slowly but surly losing all hope for human kind. I get so upset about things like that...I really shouldn't but, it's just so terrible and heart wrenching to me that people are filled with such venom. Sorry to rant...Back to your poem, I like how you get into the nittygritty of politics and the struggles of humans but keep it simple and understated at the same time. Very interesting write.
