Reconstruction

by Malika Bierstein

Inspired by an interview with Toni Morrison on “A Mercy”

What did it feel like for those who were turned
away, told by their own that blackness
comes in shades? After the Reconstruction,
reparations are just a name.

Beaten by fear, we are not
cowards anymore.

The need to feel superior, to build
strength from others’ weakness
a feeble affirmation. How can you
shun your brethren, carry on the evil
that feeds your own damnation?

Stained by a lighter canvas,
memory does not fade. We are
a collective people, our
struggle one and the same.

Beauty is a river that runs
deep within, no matter
how you try to deflect
from your history, diminish
the color of your skin.

You feet will not run far
on Achilles' heels. Walk swiftly
and go the distance using
dignity as your shield.
