Past Tense

by J. P. Davies

For the end to be, we have to see
the start become the moment
we cast it loose, untie the noose
that we've been draggin' round

in the time it takes to draw a blank
and fire a final round
to stop this train, jump on again
and ride it to the ground

we could find the score, ask what it's for
and reset the clock to zeros
be the easy fix, the second ticks
the quiet between the sounds

step off the fence, of your past tense
there's a reason for the tension
of your wasted years, and your doubts and fears
trapped in the lost and found

it's the space between
the place and the scene
that you've been living in
the hope and dream
the laugh and scream
that you've been holding on to

it's the moment just before
you find out what you're looking for
then it's over

Wow. I love the words. I'll have to check out the sound as well.
