Sweet Midnight Awakening

by Maude Curtis

A sudden summer rainstorm wakes me in the night.
I lay still with his arm flung across my chest
and listen to his strong slow breathing.
I pray our loved ones are as warm and safe as we are.

He snuggles closer and I feel his warm breath on my cheek.
I smile and remember the few minutes before we feel asleep,
the tickle fest, the giggles, the snuggling and sweet talk.
I love our special time, just him and me.

I slip from his arms and get out of bed.
On my way back I trip over the teddy bear
that he threw across the room in his act of defiance
that he wasn't ready to go to sleep.

I gaze down at my sleeping grandson, a minature of his Daddy,
from his temper, to his blond hair, blue eyes and dimpled chin.
I tuck Bear-Bear back in his arms. "Tat You", he whispers.
"You're welcome," I reply and climb back in beside him.

He snuggles close and I pull him into my arms
and bury my face in his blond baby curls.
As they tickle my nose, I inhale their sweet scent
and let the gentle rain lull us back to sleep.

Just Sweet William and me.

A sweet capture of the sweetest moments we are given. And you have 9! Wow. I have 2 and 2/3 (my first granddaughter due in October) and some of my most cherished memories are playing with my eldest grandson in the rain and snuggling to that little body that takes a southern drawl to a new level, in the night. Beautiful!

Maude,I love this and can so relate! My grandson was just recently visiting with us and he has always been welcome in our bed, which is where he prefers to sleep. You have captured it so well in your wonderful descriptions.I love it! :)
