Punchbowl by Richard VinceHe’s hanging around by the
Punchbowl, waiting to share
Interesting stories about
The ignored ingredients.
He drinks slowly so he can
Keep his memory intact, and
So he doesn’t disrupt the flow
Of the empty glass brigade.
She’s hiding in a corner, leaning
Hard on the wall in the hope
That she can merge with it and
Be ignored passively
Rather than positively.
She drinks slowly so she can
Avoid using her timid voice
Or making it more prone to
Trip over words.
He wants to share his intimate
Knowledge of the process of turning
Sugar into a lethal weapon
With her, but she would listen
Only out of politeness, her mind
Spreading its wings and flying away
From the strange, tedious man.
She wants to be the sort of person
Who can flit colourfully from
Conversation to conversation,
Lighting up the room by
Igniting others’ smiles.
He would prefer her to stay
Just as she is. He waits in vain.

Posted by Sarah Wolf on 07/16/09 at 10:30 PM I love the way you made a simple thing so interesting... Standing next to the punch bowl... very good... |

Posted by Anita Mac on 07/20/09 at 02:43 AM I am in constant danger of reverting back into that girl. A well captured moment; a well captured relationship. |
