Topical Confusion

by Richard Vince

Oh, to be able to read you
When I read your words,
Even though I know that
Isn’t what I really want.

Merely to know what
You’ve said once you’ve said it
Would be sufficient.

I wonder how someone
So cryptic can possibly
Offend, and can only conclude
That the offended find offence
Only because they look for it.

That outlook puzzles me,
For I know the extent to which
We make our own happiness
And our own sadness.

It merely seems that you
Are an easy target,
Being someone we make
In our own image.
