Life of the Party by Ken HarnischThank me for what?
It is my nature to be a charming man
One who is sought out to enliven parties
The way piñatas energize the little kids
Who whack at them with blinders on
And big sticks in their hands.
I’m a fount of useless information;
A Jeopardy champion with pizzazz;
But I deliver trivia in such
A way as to make the other guests oooh and ahh
And wonder what I could be
If I had a life.
I am the third ring in the circus
The hor d’ouerves served
Between the salad and the dinner
You will preface all introductions of me by
Listing my achievements
And I will scratch my way
Through the sand trying to find the one that is real
But I’m being hard on myself.
A desperate need not to sit alone
At home and brood over past indiscretions
And other tragedies makes me grateful
For all invitations.
True, too, that I can liven up a room.
I sometimes wish I had
A friend like me so I could
Wonder, from time to time,
What makes him tick.
As my friend, he’d claim it’s mostly because
I serve a nice drink and
Out-of-this-world lasagna.
But I think there’s more going on there
Than we know.

Posted by Kris Mara on 07/10/09 at 08:54 PM chock full o' greatness...it's got a great, lively and light humor throughout, cleverly crafted descriptions (which I always just want to eat up), and a solid flow that kind of bounces down the page...slick...I love it. |
