Henry's Time to Shine

by Maude Curtis

When we were last together we went "crusin".
Me an' Sally r finally gettin' along.
It's funny what a lil' sprussin' up'll do.
So if ya wanna know wha's next, come along.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

So Cy finally got me all put together
an' Ah'm really glad Ah'm finally red.
Now he has sumthin' up his sleeve fer me
an' if it's what Ah think it is, Ah'm scared.

Well tha mornin' after me an' Sally's date
Ah got woke up real early by Cy an' his buddies,
laughin' an' goin' on 'bout somethin' called "World a Wheels"
an' they's anxious ta see all tha beauties.

Ah like lookin' at beauties. Hope they take me.
Then all a sudden they opens up tha garage door
an' there sits mah trailer all painted up.
Guess Ah'm goin'. Don' have ta wonder anymore.

They drives me onta tha trailer an' ever'body piles in
an' away we goes down tha highway. Ah start ta wonderin'
where in tha world, an' then Ah see it, a big sign,
"'World of Wheels' Car Show this weekend."

'Bout then Cy takes a long curved right off tha highway
an' inta this big town. So many lights an' so much noise
like Ah'd never seen before. Not sur Ah like this.
An' tha guys r jumpin' up an' down like a bunch a boys.

We pulls up ta this here really big buildin'
an' Cy drives tha truck inside, trailer an' all.
It's tha biggest garage in tha world an'
inside r tha fanciest cars an' trucks Ah ever saw.

People standin' 'round talkin' 'bout some guy
named "Daddy Ray". Cy dun lost his mind.
Ah don' belong here. Ah'm jest an' old car.
Ah need to find a wall ta hide behind.

Ah seen some a these cars n tha magazines
tha' Cy had in tha garage an' some Ah heard
tha guys talkin' 'bout while they wuz "workin"
on me. Like tha' one overthere.

Tha's Charlie's 38 Chevy from Texas. WOW!! It's trick.
An' tha' '49 Mercury, Ah heard it went on a "World Tour"
There's tha "Bob-Tailed Nag" an' Tom's 48 Ford Pick-up.
Ah'm way outta mah league here, tha's fer sure.

But 'fore Ah could say mah piece Cy starts unloadin' me.
He parks me in a spot an' Momma starts ta cleanin'
while Cy goes ta sign me in. A couple a hours later
when all tha work wuz dun Cy comes back a grinnin'.

"Sorry Babe" Cy says grinnin' "I got hung up."
Like she believed tha'. Cy's lookin' sorry
an' says, "Henry's looking real good. Thanks a lot."
Is he in fer a big pay back. Ah see a new paint job fer Sally.

Well, there Ah wuz, in a car show. Feelin' outta place.
But Cy wuz a smilin' an' tha' makes me happy.
Hundreds a people lookin' an' pointin' at "me".
Momma says Ah'm cuter than a spotted puppy. :-)

Ah jest sit there while ever'body wonders 'round
talkin' an' laughin' an' havin' a good time.
Once some boys got too close an' their Dads hollered,
"Grant, Shawn, Carlos. Hands in yer pockets an' don't touch nothin'."

Whew! Tha' wuz close. Good thing they hollered.
This here old man come by fer a look see.
an' he jest stood there an' stared. An' it hits me,
It wuz Pops, an' he didn' even recognize me.

Then these here guys with boards with paper on 'em
comes by an' big as nothin' steps right over mah rope
an' gets right up close. They all but crawled up mah tail pipe.
An' Cy jests stands there an' lets 'em, grinnin' like a dope.

Two days a such goin' on, an' Ah'm missin' mah garage.
An' yea Ah guess Ah'm missin' Sally a litl'.
Then tha crowds start ta thinnin' out
an' there's jest tha cars an' their people.

Then tha guys were all standin' 'round
a big wooden floor an' listenin'
real close ta some guy callin' names
an' givin' 'way these big shiny thins'.

Purty soon Ah sees Cy comin' 'cross tha way,
wavin' one a those things an' grinnin' from ear ta ear.
He's a hollerin', "WE WON, WE WON. BEST OF SHOW! WE WON"
What do you think of Henry now? My Dear."

They's all smilin' an' laughin' an' in all tha 'xcitement
Ah never even knowed when Cy hauled me onta tha trailer
an' we headed home. Ah jest gave out a big yawn
an' settled down fer tha ride, cuz ever'thin's a blur.

After a while Ah'm so glad ta see tha soft lights
a tha house an' then finally mah garage, Home Sweet Home.
Cy unloads me an' sets tha big shiny trophey on tha bench.
Ah siddle up ta Sally an' whisper "Baby, Ah'm Home."

She gives a yawn an' nuzzles mah fender
an' softly says, "I missed ya, ya big lug nut."
Then Ah spot sumthin' in tha corner.
Ah asks Sally. "Whadda think that's 'bout."

"I don't know. It came while you were gone.
I don't like it either. it's smell makes me gag."
Ah drift off ta sleep wonderin' what's next.
an' thinkin' tha' it smells like a pig.

Wha'ever it is, it's a story fer 'nother time.
Cause Ah'm too tired ta write 'nother line.

Author's Note: So that's Henry's story. And it just goes to show that with the right people and a lot of money even an old car can be a show car. So don't give up your dreams because you too can shine like the evening star.

...Maude, while you take a bow, i'll catch-me-breath. i wanna say first i love the vernacular of that era/peeps etc., and you're translating/transferring[bringing the reader into the moment via dialogue] of the story that is now theirs...and that's a friendly slope of depth................and then i feel the love/care//acceptance-with-no blame, no questions i.e. wisdom, in the vein that with all the hoopla, yahooing of/from the world of owners and awers, the "old" Henry is still Old Henry...a happy and loving read, very!
