Letter I Should've Written {Mom}

by Brian Fuchs

9 June 1996
Paris, France

Mom

There is emptiness in Parisian hotel,
my strength is lacking and a cold has set in

I walked the Champs Elysees this afternoon.
It was dreamlike to scurry along the street
in search of unique souvenirs.
My francs were not spendable, the beautiful things
fail to increase my willingness to part with them.

I walked Paris with Jon,
who purchased beer from vending machines.
We shopped in stores that were not special,
spent our money on things we didn't want.

It is silent here tonight and the air is mild.
The silence I value gives me such a sense of freedom.
They say it may rain tomorrow.

I'm going to miss this country.

Author's Note: I've revised this and cannot get it to be what I intended it to be. While the original captured the feeling slightly better, the wording was awkward and needed to be altered. I may revisit this one again, but I'm not going to wait another 9 years.
