the trysting tree

by Peter Humphreys

sitting under
our elder tree
ye promised me
and I thee
our tryst
would last
forever
and as the wind
rose up
from the sea
and scattered us
with florets free
I felt
its direction
change unknown
unnoticed
except by me
a light kiss
upon the brow
not the ear
as out across
the wild swept bay
where bobbing boats
and the surf manes
of wild horses
rode to shore
a startled hare
bound o'er the ditch
a nervous king
of his meadow
everywhere is
west of here
and north
and south
and east
and 'neath
and through
and by
and over
for the axis of
the earth doth turn
beneath the bending boughs
of our wonder-filled
elder tree
