Thoughts on a Highway

by Alison McKenzie

The couple in the Jeep
Didn’t seem to mind
That the belongings
Strapped to the roof
In clear plastic bins
Exposed them

While Diana Krall
Seduced me with
Her rendition of Joni Mitchell’s
“A Case of You”
And the tears fell

Because I’m thirsty
For my man run dry.

And I wondered why it is
The soaring of turkey vultures
Inspires me less than
The majesty of the Bald Eagle.

I am common,
My observations unremarkable;
My loneliness far too incidental,
The vulture’s kin.

Methinks it is only the common observations that are truly remarkable. And the incidental so often opens the door to the main point. This touched me.
