From California

by Leonard M Hawkes

From a clutter of coastal hills
Through the arid expanse of the Mojave
The land rose upward,
And not far beyond the pink cliffs of the Virgin,
I saw fresh snow on the Tushars
And knew I was home.

The ease of the ocean behind me,
I must brace myself to live the life
Of the stony heart of the continent:
Ungroomed, honest, and raw.
