Bible Belt

by Elizabeth Hoadley

that saving grace
lit me up good
cursing up a storm
in heart felt anger

my tongue, hot and sticky,
spit fire onto His
overalls and ran a muck
on the family farm

shoot, can't even
curse without the good Lord,
or one of his spies,
slapping the back of my hide

I was taught, from day one,
to respect the good Book
and should I lead a righteous
life, I would be redeemed in heaven

As my legs have grown strong,
I see right and wrong
there ain't no right and wrong
just the songs
that Sunday school sings

can't be bothered with
childish things

S'pose the only way
to make it through this world
dead or alive
is to survive

survive the drought,
when there ain't no
money coming in
and when there ain't
no one complaining

Our Lord and Savior
taught many lessons

Now, like everyone else,
I am awaiting His blessing
