optical illusion

by Ava Blu

i
will tell you goodbye
when the lens on your camera has fogged
from the last breath i have

and the last image of my arms
outstretched
forming a heart
no longer soothes
you

i
will not look at my watch every 6 minutes
wishing the day would not end
begging to have my birthday wishes again
if only to use them on
us

they
cannot shake me from this perch
this soaring above everyone
with no landing in sight
with no desire to not be
us

we
will become a painting for others to recreate
a museum of analogies and metaphors
and art that most would not consider
art
and we will not think too highly of ourselves
realizing the end is always a second away

and we will throw out our dictionaries
our encyclopedias
and we will make our own
ending.

Author's Note: love. love is not the illusion. the delusion is others thinking i am something other than in love or thinking this is about something other than the love in my life.

Well...I suck. Anyway, it's no easy feat to create longing that doesn't come off as too weepy for its own good, too whiny or too self-serving. It doesn't surprise me in the least that you sidestep every one of those pitfalls and create a piece that is both moving, generous and honest in your willingness to expose a side of yourself that some people are often afraid to. You probably won't agree with me, but you are absolutely fearless in everything you write, and this one proves that with beautiful, quiet imagery and a tone I'd love to see more of, as much as I tend to love the other stuff. Again and again, you prove yourself to be a writer capable of anything while never once losing your honesty. That's an exceptionally rare gift.

This is ethereal. Everything comes together for this delicate, razor-thin feeling; the title, the color used against a white background, the imagery (fog, time, birthday wishes, flight), eschewing permanence and definition (dictionaries, "traditional" art, self-obsession). It's a beautiful effect and I'm adding it to my favorites.

maybe words arent enough and the reader must be aware enough to read between the lines and appreciate the brushstroke of the artist. a glimpse without blinders.
