if words were synonymous with thought

by Frankie Sanchez

I.
if words were synonymous with thought
then, you wouldn't have to ask
because you'd already know,

II.
and this head wouldn't be a prison,
and this chest wouldn't be a grave,
and you'd have stopped me from writing this,
and when i opened my mouth to speak,
you'd remind me that words are not ever an effective tool of expression,
words are labels for items we can not touch,
ideas defined,
emotions imprisoned,
humanity limited,

III.
if words were synonymous with thought
i'd have more than metaphors to express myself
and you'd understand how (and why)
on most days i feel like the elephant in the room;
wide as a river mouth, as obvious as a solar eclipse,
and as socially awkward as introducing fact in a room full of opinion,

IV.
if words were synonymous with thought
then, i wouldn't have to tell you that the elephant in the room is made of wood
and how it pines to be real and touched and seen for what it is.

Author's Note: [the chambers of my heart are chambers, and my blood is merely a temporary prisoner; released on bail paid in oxygen molecules.]

You couldn't have any idea how timely this is in my own process of realizations, that the more I try to "capture" a moment with words, the less effective those descriptives are. Nothing seems to be able to express my experiences lately. They only serve to make the experience smaller than it was, some important detail being left out for lack of adequate letters. Brilliant work, Frankie! The ineffable on this very page.

Sometimes the tangible just can not express what is felt deep inside, although we try. I enjoyed this read! MFS

I've been battling a similar thought in my head lately. You've coined it pretty well here. Too bad I didn't know you were thinking this earlier, we could have collabed!

this is immense...each stanza holds such great honesty told with such wit, I'm just in awe upon reading it...

Hmmm I like this a lot. It captures a dilemma which often confronts us as writers and readers. peace --bf
