Music

by Leonard M Hawkes

In a time
Of boxes and fences,
With so much,
So many broken,
So much on the mend;
The gifts of St Cecilia,
The spirit and the light
That they engender,
Become a life line--
And may I hold fast.

And of even greater importance,
May that tow
That I am asked to lend
Be firm and true:
Light from Apollo
To brighten and lift,
To cleanse the inner vessel,
And as with Orphaeus,
Deliver from the darkness
And confinement of Hell.
