Quietly Unhinged by Alison McKenzieMy wind chimes are mourning -
Wistful harmonies of ache.
Far away, the loss
Of my son's next child
Echoes across the mountains,
The lament of my children’s hearts
Pierces the sky, and my soul.
Once removed as I am,
I remember how searing
The course of such a departure,
How empty arms throb
To feel the promise
Of that precious bundle -
How I long to ease their anguish.
I send, instead, my vision of support -
Gold-skinned entities who
Cradle their grief
In a mesh of comfort and love,
As if even the best of it
Could take away the sting.
In a way nearly incomprehensible,
We will miss the baby
We never even got to meet,
While part of her parents’ hearts
Will leave, forever to dwell with
That unborn soul,
How it would have touched every tomorrow
With a magic like no other.

Posted by A. Paige White on 05/16/09 at 07:02 PM It is. My grandson Logan helped Chip and I get over one when I was 39. I'm so sorry for your child's pain Ali. My daughter had her first ultrasound yesterday and had quite a bit of anxiety that she'd not felt the baby move until the day before that. Chip and I know exactly what that pain is like. I will remember to pray comfort for you all. It can be devastating for a while. |

Posted by Elizabeth Jill on 05/16/09 at 10:36 PM This is an ache that defies comfort, an ache that defines the loud loud silence of an unheard breathing child. And your poem is the hold of arms tightly around the chest of loss. |
