life lived

by Charlie Morgan

he held sunshine in his cupped palms.
at 4yrs. old, you can do that.
opening his hands, he allows
it to break free, bathe the world.

he will only be able to do this
for a few years; at 10 yrs. old
he'll have matters of great
consequence to deal with:
science fair, homework, Susie.

then a quiet, few years later
he'll see his friends look down
lamenting how 'natural he looks.'
his cupped hands holding sunshine.

That third stanza packs quite a punch. Reminds me of the D.H. Lawrence poem Rollings posted in the forum. I hope my stilled and quieted heart will be holding that sunshine, at the end, my friend.

This is a beautiful read. A child can see and feel what we adults ignore. I could see the 4 yr old boy cupping his hands full of sunshine, and at 10, letting it go. This piece is beautiful- as seen through the eyes of an innocent child. Thank you for this.

That's a great last stanza, and it absolutely, completely works with the rest of the piece.

Nice write, Charlie. I hope I can hold the sunshine clear though to the end.

All the material worries gone. That is the 4yr old. That is the body without the years scratching at the edges. But, Charlie, love, I see the sunshine in you all the time. You're not dead yet, darling guy!

Charlie, I love the poems you write about your grandson. They really brighten my day and are quite touching.

Such a lovely poem ....life moves so fast doesn't it! Grab some of that sunshine and keep it in your pocket for a rainy day.

So the Morgan's have a monopoly on the sunshine? Thats where it's been...This should be titled "living life"...That Susie line sure made me smile Charlie... A big THANK YOU for this one, it's lovely...

This is a bit of pure bliss, Chaz. Tender, yet haunting, in a good way. Seems while we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is. Thanks.
