All That Glitters by Genevieve Sturrocklisten up you children
you, who think you
know so much more
about life than
those who have
lived it before you
listen well to the
voice of your elders
for we only wish
to protect you
from your foolish
headstrong,
headlong rush
into disaster
you love without limits
without care
without fear
you take precautions
with your body
but not with your
heart
you stand on that
mardi gras float
flinging pieces
of yourself into
the surging masses
as though you
were made up
of a thousand, thousand
glittering beads
and when you
settle down
fall in love
and begin to
live life
for real
not for
play
you will realize
that those pieces
you so freely
threw away
leave gaping holes
that can never
be filled
like a sieve
your life
seeps away
leaving you
unsatisfied
constantly
trying to
fill it up
listen you children
and listen well
for a whole generation
of perforated people
have paraded before you
leaving pieces of
themselves
scattered
on the streets
ground beneath
the uncaring feet
of the surging masses
glittering beads
crushed into the dirt
no longer treasure
but mass display of
filthy litter 04/24/2009 Author's Note: well...it was an idea. it needs a lot of work. will probably rework it.

Posted by Joan Serratelli on 04/24/09 at 06:08 PM personally, I think that this piece needs no work. It stands by itself with a powerful message that no child wants to hear, but should learn. We get older and wiser and (hopefully) learn from our mistakes. EVERY child thinks they know more than they do. Wonderful write! |
Posted by Bradd Howard on 04/25/09 at 08:20 PM it IS an idea. and a compelling one at that. We all have felt that we have left pieces of ourselves behind because we have given too much of ourselves or given ourselves carelessly to people who might not be considerate of those gifts. Thank you for sharing your words. keep them coming. |
