Acer Grandidentatum

by Leonard M Hawkes

There were maples there
The scrubby roadside type--
Creeping habitual maples
That hide and cover man-trash.

A twisted twiggy roadside hedge
With mutant star-shaped leaves--
Earth-stars that change their hue
With the seasons;

Silent, watching stars
Who know and often whisper
Of those who thumb their knows
At Eternity.
