Soldier Friend

by David Garner

after decades
we become
reacquainted

a good thing
about
facebook

friend in Iraq
I've known since
middle school

sleepless
many nights
it seems

I see him
online
at 3:30 a.m. his time

some nights
I avoid
sending him an instant message

I'd rather
him
sleep

worried
about his
awareness during the day

worried
about
a sneak attack or something like that

he tells
me he needs
a care package

and to
surprise
him

with
the box's
contents

he tells
me he
definitely needs

baby
wipes
though

I can
do that
for him

I just
wish I
could

send
him
sleep

or
better
yet

peace
of
mind

he tells
me to
pray

extra
heavy
this week

that of
course
worries me

what
is going
on

that
he can't
tell

where
is
his key to some peace

what
is the door
which locks it

how can
I help
him find it

my new
old friend
in Iraq

needs
extra prayers
this week
