Crazy. Chicken. Sane. Egg.

by Jeffrey Parren

It's the chicken
or the egg.

You go crazy
because you're homeless

or become homeless
because you're crazy.

I saw a homeless lady
today
viciously mumbling
to her homeless self

while shaking
a paper cup
with some coins in it.

I suppose
it's short-sighted
to assume her insanity
only based on
audible ramblings

but to beg for money
is not instinctual
or is it?

Perhaps it's the link
of begging for money
to the food it provides?

But wouldn't that link
be broken by insanity?

If she is crazy
then maybe
the methods done before
just continued on
as habit

but if she uses
that money
as sustenance
then is she truly crazy?

Does insanity
undermine
by halting ability
or
merely hinder it?

What does crazy really mean?

Drinking yourself
stupid
one night
and back to work
bright and early
the next morning

is seen a defiance
to the common order
to the man
but crazy?

Most, I assume,
would say
poor decision
but not mental lacking.

Maybe jogging
outside
in single digit weather
is really crazy.

The people mumbling
are then in
the minority
yet seem
better off?

What seems so simple
to diagnose
may be quick judgment
without knowledge
of facts
and important information.

Crazy.

Chicken.

Sane.

Egg.

Author's Note: I would appreciate some feedback on the strong and weak points in this please. I think it has something but not sure where I need to develop ideas. Is the end too quick? Should I ask more questions or maybe less? TY

Around and around we go, at least you can see the road. Most of us never do. Quite the map here, bravo!

I'd say less, perhaps. It does seem a little crowded with questions. The only problem with that is how I'm not sure where to cut. That has to be your call, in the end. I will say that I really like what you've got here.
