What If?

by David Neubauer

Longing, wistful, begging…
how much of our life is wasted,
waiting for the greener grass,
the sweet caress of
maybe… what if?
And then, in a moment,
life catches up.
Time is elastic,
and we feel like we’re in
one of those bounce castles
from our childhood,
confused as to which way is up,
but giddy to feel light as a feather,
and we didn’t really need “up”
Time jolts back once more,
whiplash and windburn,
wanting and wishing.
Where will we be tomorrow?
What if…?
