Epic

by David Neubauer

Ulysses, clad in his mighty armor,
was a mighty king. Hell, he has an epic
written about him.
Two, in fact.
Two, for one mightily underwhelming man.
Sure, he dealt with Scylla and Charybdis…
Sure, he had to deal with cyclops and witch,
with the arduous trek home, with so many trials.
But he never had to write the damn poem himself.
He never had to brandish quill,
to wrestle with words, to hammer and bend
each line against the forge,
to hone,
to hone,
to hone.
He took his
scabbard, his muscled arms, and
his legacy was complete.
Me, on the other hand,
I have to work damn hard,
to finely tune each word,
the balance of my sword must be perfect.
But one day, I’ll cut through history,
faster than that pansy Ulysses.
