Girl Scout Cookie

by Bradd Howard

thin mint
slipped into the sliver between your front teeth
memories of brown shoes with black socks
skipping rope
slapping out a rhythm
met with the blinking of eyes.
cardboard cutout cookies
baked to a withering brown.
too young for decay but not old enough to be fresh.
freckles promising to smile for one more day
dimples proclaiming that that is not enough
a song about anecdotes
with all contrasting notes
lemonade mouth made bearable
by the sweetness of chalk drawings on pavement
grasping fingers shovel cookies into waiting mouths.
crumbs cascade down chins
leaving dusty sweetness for us to wipe away... later.
