It's a slick thing,
the edge between hope and despair,
between open optimism and set expectations.

I walk in treadless boots
the tight-rope between us,
no handrails
and no horizon.

Someone above loves irony,
for even this precarious perch
is safer ground
than any I've walked for a long while.
