Forget Disney World

by Jeffrey Parren

I remember as a kid
seeing
the commercials

football players
screaming

"I'm going to Disneyland!"

after being asked
what they plan to do next
because they just won
that big game.

I remember
trying to imagine
what it would be like
to go see Mickey Mouse
in person

and the many other
sights and sounds
that mystical place
had to offer.

I never thought
we would ever go.

It was one of the places
you dream about
but never think you'll be there
until you finally are there.

Eventually
we did go to
Walt Disney World
and even after
my mother told me
to not stand too close
to the dolphin pool
at SeaWorld

and they splashed me
soaking wet
I still eagerly went
to see Shamu
after the shock
and taste
of that dolphin pool water
wore off.

Today
just like my youthful days
I have my own Disney World

to imagine and dream
to contemplate the possibility

of actually being there.

My adult Disney World
fantasy

is the first morning
I wake up
after my last day of waiting tables.

I could probably be splashed
out of a sound sleep
with buckets of cold dolphin water

again

but this time the shock
and taste
will
be
wondrous.

This is such a great contrast of past and present. Well done.
