Easter Morning Thoughts

by Maude Curtis

"For the Lord, God Omnipotent reignth, Hallejuah, Hallejuah"
My grandchildren squirm in the pew in front of me,
I'm surroundered by family and friends,
and my thoughts wander to the days plans.

Home after church we'll prepare our traditional Easter dinner.
Then we'll watch the children scurrying around the yard
hunting for the colored eggs we have hidden so well.
I try to remember where they all are.

My attention is drawn back to the minister
as he reads "John 3-16" "For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son."
He asks us, as parents, would we be willing to do the same?

I ask the girl to my right, a mere 20 years my junior,
She lifts a tear stained face and replies. "I just did."
and returns to her prayers.
Painfully I turn to the left and gaze past my husband.

I stare into the sad and aged eyes of my friend's mother.
Joel died forty five years ago in Viet Nam.
He never knew his father, for he died in World War II.
The question gets lost in my sorrow.

As we bow our heads in the final prayer,
the painful answer is clear to me.
His Son died so we might live
and our Sons die so we might live free.

Author's Note: Please remember our troops in our thoughts and prayers this Easter season. They are there so we might worship as we choose. Have a blessed Easter holiday.

That last stanza really drives it home. Poignant. Well done.
