Topic: Unless You Know Better

by Amanda J Cobb

See, I have a bit of a situation.
I hate having to make decisions
without all the facts,
based only on assumptions.

But you, the one with the answers,
the artful dodger
of uncomfortable questions
that might require a small dose
of introspection,
haven't let your mask slip enough
for me to see what's really there
at the heart of the matter.
Vagueries and sidesteps,
you are a one-man illusionist
and disappearing act;
I'm never quite sure
whether the smiles you throw from the stage
are genuine,
or just part of the act.
Maybe neither, maybe both;
maybe you don't even realize you're doing it.
But I'm tired of waiting,
and misinterpreting,
of feeling fooled again and again,
while you stand by smiling
that unknowable smile
that could mean anything.

For the sake of my sanity,
I'll have to assume that,
outside of being your captive audience,
willingly taken in each performance,
I mean nothing to you.
I'll have to assume
this was always just a show
and you really are as empty inside
as you want to make the world believe.

Unless you know better.
Please, tell me. You know better.
