Every Night

by Jeffrey Parren

Every night worked
has its little nuances
characteristics
that make it
its own.

Some nights every table
will be drunk before they leave.

And even better, other nights
feature them all drunk
before they even get
to
the table.

Certain nights bring out the crazies.

Others bring out the aggressors.

Others still, the pacifists.

The needy people
pick the weekends
to take a bus in
like going to Atlantic City,
the longer you play
the more comps you can get.

Even fewer are the nights
where everything goes to plan
where the service is superb
and
the tips follow suit.

The nights with big spenders
become sparse
in dire times
just as patience
does
waiting on those foreigners
not phased by economic crisis
here
abusing the dollar
while it smiles
and asks for more.

There's always a theme
every night.

Another something to endure.

Another chance to bite my tongue.

Another minute lost
sacrificing my ego
to pay the bills.

You write about your work/life so well. You have described exactly the way it is these days going out to eat. People expect everything they want and act like they are entitled to a great meal, great service, etc. I've seen these people leave pennies for tips- it's disgusting! unfortunately in these economic times, you're lucky to have a job and hope the place survives the ressession. Good write- I cold see everything you wrote about in my mind's eye!
