On Again Off Again by Jeffrey ParrenThe need to have
two days off in a row
becomes more and more evident
as I do less
on the day I have off
after having worked a shift
the night before.
I will literally stare
into the flashing lights
of the television
or gaze upon the insides
of my eyelids
trying to find some
hidden solution
to my exhaustion.
Usually
it is not until dinner time
that I finally get my wits about me
and by that time the day is lost.
The frustration mounts
as the next day I am full of energy
and back to work.
On my days off
I want to do things.
Rest and relax
Clean and organize
Laundry and vacuum
Write and create
Think of a way out of this!
So I go back to work
only to waste
what good energy and spirits I had
waiting on tables
waiting on people
waiting for the day
I can do what I want
or perhaps simply
have a job
that is the same schedule every week
so I can plan
so I can do
so I can realize the meaning
of a job well done
with some kind of reward
some flare
that my soul can pin
on its sleeve
finally something
able to look upon
with satisfaction
finally
something to be proud. 04/04/2009 Posted on 04/04/2009 Copyright © 2025 Jeffrey Parren
