Face to Face

by Meredith C Hartwell

It's complicated, she explains.
She cannot look me in the eye.

They married in the fall,
bragging about the sex,
the passion,
the way he always took care of her,
put up with her.
She threatened suicide
at every social gathering.
Bipolar melodrama, we decided.
She should not drink so much
with her medication.

She wears mirrored sunglasses
when it's raining.
It's complicated.

She explains,
I should have known
there was a problem
when he said I looked beautiful
with a broken arm.
