she was once a diva

by Charlie Morgan

she was heavy; looked only at the floor.
people didn't look back so she'd turned
her eyes, her heart to the ground,
or the birds of the air.

so free, she thought of the birds.
a loud grin erupted from her
as she spoke back to me.
her two legs holding the floor.

she spoke of the veins in the leaf,
the stars; the light and balance.
catapillars, the eater and the ate.
she saw it all, magnificence.

knock on my door, she begged.
come in. come to see me. see Me.
but she had decided long ago
to not be seen but in her dreams.

a frightened face, excess emotions;
a characature of deeper oceans,
just below the surface, under
her pain and ready to blow.

and the grin wiggled into a calm;
it had been years since the girl
was hidden inside her, now replaced
by the grown woman, eschewing all.

but every now and then, she opens.
like a broadway show, footlights
of appreciation and love, bathe
her in the daily openings.

I love this. Every bit of it and have added it to my favorites.

I love the way you looked at someone in this light and captured it. It reminds me that no matter how old we get, there's still a little kid in us, and it's ok for it to come out sometimes.

Nice to see you recognize the loveliness inside someone that is now and always will be a beauty, no matter the age. smh

Oh Charlie. How you capture a woman.

That 4th stanza really got me Charlie. I love the whole poem but the 4th stanza is my favorite. Wonderful!
