synesthesia by Scott Cadence
Days like today
leave me vacant,
like a stranger
in my own life -
when I’ve spent
all my time
taking on contortionist
shapes
to fit into your heart,
like a paper clip
bringing together
all the perfect moments
laid out on the floor,
satisfying
all the senses
on impulse
without substance,
how I’ve labored
over this body
of work:
crescendos
in poetry
from acts
of obscurity.
Hearing colors
and feeling nothing,
Mondavi and emply bottles
of Dali
for the next morning,
the inevitable
but most interesting
walk of shame.
