Winter Remains In Our Hearts

by Richard Davis

This is the season when the world is reborn,
When nature sings her happiest song, but
because you are gone, the darkness
of winter remains in our hearts
and our sorrow lingers on.

This morning I heard the first robin singing at dawn.
Was he singing so sadly because you are gone?
That's what my heart said to me when I heard his song.
My heart told me that it was for you the robin mourned.

When nothing can stop the tears that we weep
One thought can make the heart rejoice and sing,
That like the flowers now waking from their winter sleep
Your soul now awakens in Heaven's eternal spring.

Author's Note: This was written for my oldest sister's youngest daughter and was read at her funeral. She died at the age of forty from severe health problems. She left behind a family of three young children which made her death even more tragic.
