The Laying On of Hands

by Ken Harnisch

In the morning she leans into my hands

I am surprised she is so brazen
Given the handbook on proper employee
Behavior, and the fact
We can be seen by everyone
Who is buzzed through the
Second-story door.

My shoulder hurts, she says
From shoveling and shopping;
I need your touch, she says
You have such a way with your fingers.

The receptionist snorts, her eyes
Seeing more than is there
Or maybe, it’s just me
Who is the blind one here.

I know I like the laying on of hands
And the way her back feels
Against my palms. And the missing
Part of intimacy, which tactile is,
Comes back to haunt me

But never so much
I don’t know what I’m doing
I was guileless in another lifetime
But so was I innocent.

I stopped making value judgments
Years ago, and now my fingers
Do rotations, with my third eye
Always fixed upon the door.

But god, it feels so good
To be whatever it is this makes me.

This builds really, really well, man. The imagery and tone are dead-on.

I agree with Gabe....but if this is a true story- watch out for a sexual harrassment suit! Good poem- I could see the entire scenerio happening.
