Falling Asleep

by Joan Serratelli

I went to sleep early
last night
after getting up
very early
While laying there,
I pondered
this thought:
how do you know
when you're sleeping?

I yawned a little,
pulled the blanket
over my head
and the next thing
I knew
I was sleeping

A few hours later,
I got up
took a pill
and pondered
this thought:
how do you know
when you're sleeping

I yawned a little,
pulled the blanket back
over my head
and the next thing
I knew
I was sleeping

A few hours later,
I woke up again
and figured that
maybe
I should just stay awake
but it was too early
so I repeated the process
and sleep once again
came over me

I still want to know
when it is
that you know
that you are sleeping

Author's Note: i've had problems falling asleep and staying asleep lately. Maybe I should have titled this "Thoughts From An Insomniac"!

Either title would have worked. From one insomniac to another, this is great.

...you know i'm pretty smart. you're sleeping when you don't know it; you're awake when you know it. that's the difference. small i know. such is life's many secrets...joan, durned if i know but i love the waltzing back n' forth with that thought...you did.

I hear what you are saying here. Myself, I forget that I remember, and dream that I forget...Well done.

I honestly sometimes think of it, while I'm sleeping. And not during a dream, either. Weird. I hope that, sleep or not enough sleep, you rest.
