when you split an atom
people die
flowers turn into ashes,
and everything you see a second ago,
disappears

like a david copperfield sleight of hand.

when you start nudging some atoms
hydrogen and oxygen become water,
water eventually boils,
and what you have now wasn't what you had a second ago

like a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.

when you do nothing to an atom,
inertia eventually slows to a stop,
water freezes,
life ceases to exist
and you're left with the frozen shell of something else

like jack torrence in the hedge maze.
