at least 2 fingers

by Nanette Bellman

he stopped me while walking back from the bathroom.
i was in front of the pool table, sitting out.
pools a game i have hatred for.

he looked at me, then past me,
at her.

"is that her?" he asked.

i nodded and said yes.

"you're a better woman then she'll ever be."

he was almost too drunk too walk.
so we put our arms around each other
and i helped him to his stool.

"i think we should go tell her all this."

"no.no.no.no.no!" i panicked.

"you can't be happy.
you have emotions.
how are they?"

"see, i'm kind of like a guy when it comes to that."

"soo, you can fuck him without feeling?"

"no, it's just that in my past...

"we're not talking about that.
we're talking about this.
answer the question.
when you fuck him,
do you feel anything for him?"

"yes..."

"i'm not going to say anything to her.
just know that you're better than this,
better than her.
you're an attractive girl
and if he ever hurts you when i'm here,
he'll have to deal with me."

i walked away and swallowed my heart.
the sound of the ball game filled my ears
while anxiety filled my brain.

he spoke again,
"will somebody play some damn music on the jukebox?
it's too quiet in here!"

"gimme a dollar, Vince." i rebuttled back.

he turned and looked at me,
motioned me to come hither with one finger,

i walked over, snatched the dollar out of his hand.

"play me some Tom Petty.  you play the other song."

i looked him in the eyes,

"ok, but it takes more than that to make me come."
