Leviathan

by Jared Orlando

You know, it’s been a long time
And these roads all look the same
A tree, a bird, a forked road, with no destination and
I keep the same songs in my head
As they whisper and my ears accept
Hello.
I whistle the words you taught me
My heart recites the feelings you brought it
But I never choose exactly the right shoes to wear
And I’m always tripping on rocks and
My eyes never stay straight
Because your ghosts are on the right
Your phantoms exude on the left
Almost like you’re above me
With nothing but a piece of glass
Positioning perfectly to burn
My every step and it seems I can hear you laugh
I can almost hear you sneer, if I listen
Closely.
You never seemed closer by being so far
Away.
The only way I can focus is to keep time
Toe-tapping and consistent blinking
Yes, I’ll blink you out
And I’ll tap you out
I’ll write you out, and sing you out
I will fight to break your name in pieces
The rocks you laid in my path are all the more reason
To throw them straight back at you
Because you’re the leviathan
With the strings of my heart
You lift my legs up and shift them about
My paths are only a public stage
For you to manipulate my marionette steps
To control my thoughts and replace with longing
Longing
Longing
Longing
The mahogany taste on my tongue,
You’ve placed doubt around my feet
These rocks, these barriers
You’re the leviathan
But my stones are no match
Ropes and stakes won’t bring you down
Because men are colonies of ants
That you let your eyes burn
