"Run Lonesome"

by Max Phineas

You can keep chasing that shadow
Hope it doesn't fade away
Or stretch toward infinity as the sun sets.
You can hope it turns around
And chases you back.

Ever notice if you squint, how it disappears?
You'd be better off chasing shapes through mirrors.
You always know where they're headed.

But I know myself
and I will keep trying to outrun the dusk.
And I'll keep grasping at empty air
Because I can't bring myself to end the chase.

The funny thing
The really hilarious caveat:

You don't know you're being chased at all.

Ah yes, as the old story goes, you chase a woman until she catches you. Nice write.

I definitely understand that feeling. I really love it!
