just because you can give shots, doesn't mean i can't call them

by Nanette Bellman

before i strip down and stirrup
i think we should shake hands.
and by shake hands, i mean
i'm going to be this doctor's worst nightmare.

because i'm going to lay
all my questions and concerns
out on the table first.
just to see if it's even worth
continuing this appointment.

i need to know if anything can be done.
more importantly,
if anything will be done for me.

if the answer is no
i think it's only fair
that if you don't waste my time,
i won't waste yours.

BRAVO! Drs need to realize that we pay them; they don't pay us. They need to listen to our problems and if they don't know what's wrong; they need to have the guts to tell us. i have an orphan condition- very difficult to treat. I am tied of being every dr's "science project". Thank you for this piece. It hits so close to home.

Oh, please don't, N. The earth needs you. And so do I. There's some things I want to soak up from you.

I love reading your poetry ~ a lot of times it's written in a way that I feel like I'm eavesdropping in on a conversation you're having with yourself. And I'm always interested in the way it's going.
