there was a note on the kitchen counter
between the coffee and sugar
saying, "i love you more."

it can't be denied when its on paper
written in that neatly printed font
that carries the words so smartly.

tomorrow there will be another
folded and tucked underneath the orange juice
-nifty spot for a well placed apology-
praising the ability to persevere through the tears.

that night i will come home to you smiling,
eyes laughing at me, and saying,
"i'm only teasing."
because you know i'm just being a girl.
