It was easy in the beginning

by Vikki Owens

...loving you,
falling into you
was like falling into water,
you filled up the spaces all around me,
filled up even the little
creases of my fingerprints,
you even filled up the hollow
of my mouth
and when my eyes were open
you coated my irises in yourself.

it was easy in the beginning

...loving you was
like stepping off a ledge
letting gravity take over,
you dont even have to think about it
you just fly for a long time.
the blue of your eyes
was the blue of the sky
and the sound of your voice
was the sound of the rushing of the atmosphere
from the top
to the bottom of the world
i could plummet
all day and all night
into you
and it was just that easy.

but then there is always the moment
when the surface of the water
closes again
and you find yourself on the wrong side of it

and theres always the part
where the surface of the earth
meets your skin

and then its not so easy.

Geeeze. I was falling with you, feeling the freeness of it. Then I was crashing with you, like I am in my real life. I've met the earth, and I'm drowning at the same time. It's not so easy. You said it, sista!
