The Agony of Defeat

is only as great
as the fight in the dog.
The refusal to submit
under the forces
of habit and letdown
keeps the fury alive
while hopes and dreams
survive bitter days.
When positives fester
all is lost
and, too, the agony of defeat
becomes accepted
sometimes expected
