A Time of Cherish by Alison McKenzieA locket of my pre-gray hair,
Baby fine and wisps of wistful,
Undone by lovers
Sentiments by Hallmark,
Handwritten testaments of adoration
Forever, gone awry.
Ceramic cast of toddlers’ hands,
Crayon’d art in shades of wonder
“I love you, Mommy” in elementary writ.
Likenesses of the generation I bore,
Their open globes casting
Jubilant shadows over obscurities.
A bottle of tears,
A drop of blood,
A handkerchief of beaten brow.
A calendar of crossroads,
A map of havens,
Trinkets collected on the perfect journeys.
A birth certificate
Bearing my name,
For a time of cherish.
02/17/2009 Author's Note: We had to write a time capsule poem for my poetry class, items we would put in, to be opened in 50 years.

Posted by Genevieve Sturrock on 02/18/09 at 02:41 AM A bottle of tears,
A drop of blood,
A handkerchief of beaten brow...my favorite by far! a testament to the hardship of the journey of our lives, and in 50 years, proof that the previous generation had hard knocks too |
